Destination Information: Diving in Komodo region especially around the national park is one of the world's top locations in terms of bio diversity and desirable diving conditions. The Komodo national park is home to thousands of species of protect species including corals, sponges, invertebrates, fish and large sea creatures. Everything a diver could possibly ask for in abundant supply and with wreck dives and many species only viewable in this area of the world such as the sun fish. Conditions for diving are usually excellent, especially in the dry seasons when visibility is very clear. The water is always warm meaning it is only necessary to where a thin wetsuit under your BCD. Some areas can have strong currents and themoclines that can be dangerous which is one of the reasons that it is important to only dive with recommended and professional dive centers who understand the conditions required for each spot to be dived safely.
Water temperature is typically between 27ºC and 28ºC with common visibilities of between 25 and 35 meters. However the southern area is slightly cooler where it is still advisable only to use a 3mm dive suit but not here applicable to use a short suit which you may find comfortable and maneuverable in the northern areas of the waters of Komodo. The visibility can also be poorer here although rarely drops much further than the 10 meter mark and it here that the diving is incredibly exciting. The cooler temperatures are due to the up swellings of cool water from the depths of the Indian Ocean that brings a constant abundant supply of plankton across the reef meaning that life here is very active. There are giant coral fans that branch off soaking up the rich nutrients in the water as well as many invertebrates and reef fish. Large plankton filterers such as manta rays are common and there is even the occasional whale shark in this area.
It is extremely important when diving in Komodo area to ensure that you only use reputable diving organizations who are PADI endorsed. There are a number of low cost Komodo diving organizations who may claim to be PADI endorsed but it usually visibly obvious when walking into the headquarters what the standard of operations is like. Do a little research and work out who the top establishments are in the area in which you are likely to be. Although this is always the case with Komodo diving trips it is particularly important in this area due to the strong currents and difficulty conditions that are common in many areas. There are over 50 well known and documented sites in this area and many other spots that are incredible for diving but it is very important that the dive center you are using are aware of the conditions and times of year that certain spots become more dangerous and also understand the ability and experience of the divers and find a suitable dive accordingly. This being said there are plenty of gentle drift dives and safe dives even for absolute beginners.
