Destination Information:
Fishing in Komodo is typically game fishing otherwise known as sport fishing or GT fishing. The Komodo area is renowned as being a GT area where it is common to have over 30 big fish bites on an 8hr trip. Especially in the southern areas where it is possible to catch manta rays and other exotic fish although Ulua, Giant Trevally and Carax Ignobilis are the main target fish. These fish are famous for there endurance when battling the fish to the surface and make for the fishing trip of a lifetime. These GTs can be as large as 20 to 50kilo especially in the south where their food is in abundant supply, it is possible to get extremely large and strong stubborn fish.

It is very important when participating in fishing around Komodo, Rinca and Labuan Bajo of this nature that you employ and well known recommended organization with reliable boats that are capable of carrying the number of people on board and can withstand the rocking and often violent movements to the boat that the target fish can produce when in the fight. Also a competent captain is important for firstly knowing where and when to fish for different targets in different seasons as well as knowledge of the surrounding waters and where the shallow reefs are and when and how the currents are likely to affect the fishing. It is also helpful to employ a captain who is aware of how to position and maneuver the boar it order to help the fight to bring the fish to the service.

It is vitally important when fishing in Komodo or Rinca or Labuan Bajo to fish within the codes and ethos of the natural park surrounding this area and respect and adhere to the principles that that are improving the fishing conditions in this area. Mainly effective catch and release is important to maintain the population of target fish if only for the sake of future fishing and also for the rejuvenation of the ecosystems of this area. It is important to look into effective catch and release techniques as many fish can die shortly after being released due to serious damage from pure technique. Some basic guidelines are:

• To manhandle the fish as little as possible when out the water and use gloves in order not to disturb its protective coating.
• It is important not to force hooks free when lodged in the fishes gills or guts, this will do the fish more harm than good.
• Simply cut away as much of the hook as possible when it is in a sensitive area and leave the rest in, this is safe and far less damaging as those of you will know who have brought a fish aboard that already has a half dissolved hook embedded in its gills from a previous catch.

Fishing in Komodo is excellent and with the areas beauty, the inexpensive luxury accommodation, beautiful tropical landscapes and beaches and all the other aquatic and land activities available within this amazing culture, Komodo is an ideal location for your next trip.
